Greg Girard – Richmond/Kowloon, Richmond Art Gallery

“It is dusk and the stucco façade of a small, postwar bungalow is fading into the shadows. Behind and above it looms a huge, brightly lit building topped with a glowing, disk-shaped roof. From this vantage point—the bungalow’s tidy front yard—the structure resembles an alien spacecraft, making a landing in suburban Richmond.

But although it evokes Stephen Spielberg’s sci-fi film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the futuristic form is actually the Bing Thom–designed Aberdeen Centre. And the image is not a movie still, but one of a series of highly detailed colour photographs that Greg Girard shot in Richmond over the past two years.” Read the full review.

Born in Edmonton, Danny SInger lives and works in Vancouver. For the past decade, Danny Singer has been traveling and photographing habitations across the North American prairies and plains. His work represents a document of 10 PARIS PHOTO – LOS ANGELES what is there, a subtly revealed history of lives lived, a testament to the ethic of progress that initiated these towns and the modernization and urbanization that is straining them. Ranging in width from 7 feet to 10 feet and height from a foot and a half to four, the monumental images are created from up to 150 different photographs. There’s no dearth of beautiful things to see in Vancouver, but between 7 May and 4 June, treat yourself to Robert Arndt’s vivid and dizzying solo show at Macaulay & Co Fine Art. Using a mix of media and skewed documentation to create installations, video and photography, Arndt’s work is as defiant as it is captivating.
