Nootka Convention

After being delayed in “thick” weather Discovery arrived a few hours behind Chatham to find 4 other vessels at anchor in the harbour. This Nootka convention was an assemblage of four British vessels and one Spanish, most of who were gathered for the purpose of further negotiating and signing the Nootka Sound Convention. Three weeks of exchanging rounds of 13 gun salutes with the ships cannons and discussing the fine points of the treaty proved that there were some irresolvable issues that needed to be referred back to the diplomats in London and Madrid for resolution.
